Obituary for Edith B. Shipe Marshall

Marshall Photo_edited-1Edith Barritt Shipe Marshall, 81, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 30, 2016. She passed peacefully at Winchester Medical Center surrounded by her devoted husband, Tom, and her loving children.

Edith was born January 23, 1935 in Frederick County, VA, the youngest daughter of Arnold A. Barritt and Lillie V. Greenwalt Barritt.

Edith was a member of the Second Guildfield Baptist Church of Front Royal, VA. She was active in her church group with her husband, Tom. Edith was retired from Winchester Pediatric Center.

Edith loved to work in her many flower gardens, and she enjoyed gospel music. In her younger days, Edith played the piano and loved to sing.

Edith married Charles Julian Shipe, Sr. on December 31, 1952. They enjoyed 45 years of marriage until Charles’ death in March 1998.

Edith married Charles Thomas Marshall on May 3, 1999.

Surviving with her husband are her son, Charles J. Shipe, Jr. of Winchester; and two daughters, Deborah E. Shipe of Winchester and E. Diane Shipe-Clopton of Inwood, WV; three grandchildren, Christina D. Shipe of Winchester, Beth D. Dodd of NC and Zachary J. Clopton of WV; two great-grandchildren, Quinn A. Dodd and August S. Bradford; as well as nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 A. M. Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, VA with Dr. Franklin S. Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville. A reception will follow.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P. M. Friday evening, September 9, at the funeral home.

Westford Andrew Hanline, Sr., 89, of Berryville, Virginia, died Thursday, September 1, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Hanline was born November 2, 1926 in Parsons, West Virginia, the son of Adrian Dwight and Ruby West Hanline.

He worked as the body shop manager for Clarke Motors.

He married Mabel Jenkins on December 4, 1944 in Hagerstown, Maryland.  Mrs. Hanline died May 17, 2016.

Surviving are children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Services will be private.

Thomas Michael Deal, 54, of Boyce, Virginia, died Monday, September 5, 2016 in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Deal was born July 31, 1962 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late Glenn William Deal and Charlotte V. Pearson Deal.

He worked as an installer of hardwood flooring.

Surviving with his mother are a son, Zachary Deal of Clarke County, VA; two sisters, Glenda Jenkins of Colonial Heights, VA and Janet Deal of Boyce, VA; a nephew, Jason Craun of Clarke County, VA; a niece, Heather Davis of Colonial Heights, VA and his special cat, Brownie.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P. M. Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville with David Owings officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville, VA.

Pallbearers will be Jason Craun, D. J. Himelright, Kevin Hummer, Darrell Oliver, Steven Hutchison, Bryan Shepherd, Billy Fowler, and Lloyd Snyder.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Murray Randolph Pearson, 94, of Berryville, Virginia died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Greenfield of Berryville Senior Living.

Mr. Pearson was born July 4, 1922 in Leesburg, Virginia, the son of the late Thomas Pearson and Elizabeth Harriss Pearson.

He worked as a mechanic on farm equipment.

He was a member of Hamilton-Thompson #37 Masonic Lodge in Purcellville, VA and Berryville Baptist Church.

He married Norma Fae Baxter on July 15, 1956 in Winchester, Virginia. Mrs. Pearson died May 13, 1998.

Surviving are two daughters, Anne (Andrea) Pearson Renner of Berryville, VA and Sara Elizabeth Pearson and wife, Brenda Coleman of Ashland, VA.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 A. M. Friday, September 9, 2016 at Sharon Cemetery in Middleburg, VA with Mr. John Lyttle officiating.  The family will receive friends 12:30 Friday following the service for a time of food and fellowship at the Berryville Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Thursday evening at the Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville.

Mr. Cooper was born July 21, 1956 in Charles Town, West Virginia, son of Calvin Coolidge Cooper and Elizabeth Helsley Cooper.

He was self-employed as a contractor.

He married Ivy Smallwood Cooper on August 7, 1976 in Berryville, Virginia.

Surviving with his wife are his mother of Stephens City, VA; daughter, Tara Lynn Kackley and her husband, Jerry of Bunker Hill, WV; son, Thomas Matthew Cooper of Bunker Hill, WV; grandson, Logan Kackley; granddaughter, Gwenivere “Katie B” Kackley; brother, David Cooper of Ranson, WV; sister, Donna Simpson of Stephens City, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his best friend, Terry DeHaven and family, whom he also considered family.

His father and brother, Allen Cooper, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 P. M. Friday, September 16, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, VA with Rev. Steve Melester officiating. Burial will follow in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Winchester, VA.

Pallbearers will be Terry DeHaven, T. J. DeHaven, Randy Shirkey, Mike Smallwood, Tom McIntyre and Nathan Oliver.

pitta-photoJean Lloyd Pitta, 78, of Winchester, Virginia, died Saturday, September 10, 2016 in the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center, Winchester.

Mrs. Pitta was born February 1, 1938 in Clarke County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Garland Ray “Buss” Lloyd and Rebecca Kirby Lloyd.

She retired as supervisor of the Histology Department of the Winchester Medical Center in 1998 after 41 years of service.

Jean loved her family, friends, and neighbors.  She was a very loving person.    

She was a member of Boyce United Methodist Church.  She loved duck pin bowling and was one of the top female bowlers in the area.  She loved working out in her flower beds, crafts, and ceramics.

She married Kenneth L. Pitta on June 30, 1957 in Boyce, Virginia.

Surviving with her husband are a son, Randy Pitta (Shelley) of Winchester, VA; a granddaughter, Falon Pitta Hudson (Johnathan) of Winchester, VA; a great-granddaughter, Harper Jean Hudson; a brother, Jimmy Lloyd (Marie Longerbeam) of Boyce, VA; a sister, Nancy L. Tinsman (Jack) of Berryville, VA; two brothers-in-law, Skip Levi of Berryville, VA and Rondo Pitta (Estelle) of Winchester, VA; a sister-in-law, Deanna A. Lloyd of Stephenson, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A sister, Barbara A. Levi and a brother, Howard Ray Lloyd, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A. M. Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville with Rev. Martha Reynolds and Rev. Dr. Jack Martin officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Jay Tinsman, Jimmy Tinsman, Scott Levi, Kevin Lloyd, Adam Taylor, and Randy Green.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Mrs. Broy was born February 9, 1965 in Winchester, Virginia, the daughter of Claude Robert Owens, Sr. and Lila Hare Owens.

She was a homemaker.

She married Dwaine Allan Broy on September 24, 1983 in Berryville, Virginia.

Surviving with her husband are four daughters, DeLanna Broy and Clarence Tanks, Jr. of Berryville, VA, Danna Larrick and Jonathan Larrick of Stephens City, VA, Dawnn Broy and Jesse Peacock of Berryville, VA, and Danielle Broy and Tanner Madigan of Bunker Hill, WV; two brothers, Robert Owens, Jr. and Claude Owens, Jr and Linda, all of Alabama; and seven grandchildren, Cameryn Broy, Cordell Broy, Caidan Broy, Cole Larrick, Colin Larrick, Chance Larrick, and Caylee Peacock.

A brother, Rusty Owens, grandmother, Edna Spitler and mother-in-law, Dorothy Broy, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A. M. Thursday, September 15, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville.  Burial will be private.

Obituary for Shane A. McWhorter

Shane Alexander McWhorter, 47, of Stephens City, VA on September 7, 2016 went to sleep in the Lord until Jesus comes again. 

 Shane was born on September 8, 1968 in Omaha, NE to Bruce McWhorter and Gloria Jean Day Lewis. 

He graduated from James Wood High School, class of 1988. 

Following graduation he worked as a laborer in constructing Winchester Medical Center.  Most of Shane’s career was as a caregiver for children and adults with special needs.  He worked in service for 14 years at Grafton School, followed by 5 years at Northwestern Community Services. 

Shane gave service to his country in the US Army Reserve.

He was a member of Living Faith Fellowship church in Winchester, VA.  He was a licensed Amateur Radio operator, enjoyed weight lifting, martial arts and studying God’s word.

He married Sherri Brown McWhorter on April 20, 1990 in Winchester, VA.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Sherri McWhorter; one son, Justin McWhorter, both of Stephens City, VA; parents, Randy and Jeannie Lewis of Winchester, VA, and Bruce McWhorter of Whitehorse, YT; parents-in-law, Hartsell and Doris Brown of Stephens City, VA; grandparents living, Grace Lewis of Winchester, VA; Uleain Hunt of Titusville, FL; Grandparents preceding Shane in death, Bruce N. and Joan McWhorter of Edmonton, AB; Mallie Fuller of Titusville, FL and Dick Lewis of Winchester, VA; one sister, Morgan Beachler and her husband Rob of Star Tannery, VA and their children, Amanda, Courtney, Haven and Eli; brothers-in-law, Rick Brown and his wife Kim of Winchester, VA and their children, Nick and Steven; Sam Brown and his wife Christina of Stephens City, VA and their children, Adam and Karli; including many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Saturday September 17, 2016 at the Stephens City United Methodist Church with Pastor Lyn Elliott officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, VA. A reception will follow.

Mr. McClaughry was born November 19, 1929 in Pine Grove, Virginia, son of the late Thomas E. McClaughry and Nannie Elliott McClaughry.

He worked as a brick mason.

He married Marie Ashby McClaughry on July 24, 1948 in Leesburg, Virginia. Mrs. McClaughry died on June 1, 1999.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda M. Brown and her husband, Gary, of Boyce, VA; two sons, Ronald D. McClaughry and his wife Diane, and Mark W. McClaughry all of Bluemont, VA; sister, Frances Ballenger of Bluemont, VA; four grandchildren, Jeremy E. Brown and his wife, Amy, Sara E. Brown, Matthew D. McClaughry and his wife, Erin, and Shane A. McClaughry; and three great-grandsons, Brandon E. Brown, Jared Maxwell Brown and Jameson E. McClaughry.

His daughter, Patricia A. McClaughry, brothers, Ray, Garland and Roy McClaughry and sisters, Ellen Jones and Gertrude M. Phillips, all preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 A. M. Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, VA, with Dr. Ralph Bayfield officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville. A reception will follow at Blue Ridge Fire Hall, Bluemont.

Helen Lally Harris, 91, of Maurertown, Virginia, died Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in Dutch Haven Assisted Living, Maurertown, Virginia.

Mrs. Harris was born September 22, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of the late Michael Lally and Mary Gallagher Lally.

She was a librarian.

Her husband, Richard C. Harris, preceded her in death.

Surviving are a son, Gerry Harris and his wife, Robyn, of Winchester, VA; grandson, Richard William Harris; and granddaughter, Kelsey Rose Harris.

A funeral mass will be held 10:00 A. M. Monday, September 19, 2016 at St. Bridget’s Chapel in the Field, Berryville, VA, with Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Burial will be held later in New York.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Obituary for James B. Miller

miller-photoJames B. Miller (Age 84) of Arlington, VA, died Thursday, September 15, 2016.

  Mr. Miller was widely recognized as a successful and experienced trial attorney in the fields of insurance law, personal injury litigation, municipal employee representation, and medical and legal malpractice. He was a lecturer on trial tactics for the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and for the Arlington County Bar Association. Mr. Miller also taught at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy and lectures at Georgetown University Medical Center.

  Mr. Miller was born August 12, 1932 and was raised in Arlington County, where he graduated from Washington-Lee High School. He attended the University of Virginia, where he received his B.A. degree in 1954. Mr. Miller was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army (A.S.A.) He then attended American University and was awarded his J.D. degree in 1960. He was admitted to the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar on 1961. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States on November 13, 1967.

  Mr. Miller was a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, and the Northern Virginia Defense Lawyers as well as the Virginia, Arlington and D. C. Bar Associations.

  Surviving are daughters, Karen, Kate and Leigh; grandchildren, Danny, Nikki, Maggie, Annie, Sydney, Abby, Jessie, Lindsay, Reed and Parker; and great-grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Emma and Jeremy Charles.

  Memorial service will be 11:30 A.M. Friday, October 21st at Cherrydale Methodist Church, 3701 Lorcom Ln, Arlington, VA 22207.

Mrs. Rush was born March 7, 1946 in Winchester, Virginia, daughter of the late Russell Raymond Wood and Helen Townley Wood.

She was an orderly at Winchester Medical Center.

She was a member of John Wesley Community Christian Church, Clearbrook, Virginia and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Boyce, Virginia, where she was baptized in her earlier years.

Her husband, John Ottis Rush, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Ann Rush and Helen Virginia Ford (Leycon); four sons, Robert Ottis Rush (April Harris), Kirk Anthony Rush, David Lee Rush (Angie) and Tony Eric Rush; brother, Raymond Wood, all of Winchester, VA; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Three brothers and three sisters, preceded her in death.

Obituary for Eileen L. Wrede

wrede-photoEileen Lucielle Wrede, 88, of Berryville, Virginia, died Friday, September 16, 2016 in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Wrede was born April 6, 1928 in West Orange, New Jersey, daughter of the late Josiah Gladstone Wright and Edna McMinn Wright.

After graduating in 1946 from West Orange High School she attended Babies Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1948. Following graduation she was a pediatric nurse at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey.

During her free time she volunteered with the National Association for Retarded Citizens teaching crafts to disabled children, was a volunteer with the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired typing braille cards, and volunteered with FISH in Clarke County.

She loved traveling, painting, playing the Wii, gardening and line dancing. 

She was a member of Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church, Berryville and the Clarke County Senior Center.

She married John Robert Wrede on June 25, 1951 in New Jersey. Mr. Wrede died October 26, 1984.

Surviving are a daughter, Wendy Wrede Masuhr and her husband, John, of Berryville, VA; and a son, Robert John Wrede and his wife, Sheila, of Ewa

Beach, HI.

Her sister, Adelaide Richards, preceded her in death.

A celebration of life will be held 6:30 P. M. Friday, September 23, 2016 at Marvin Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Patrick officiating.

Louis Champ, 91, of Stephens City, Virginia, died Sunday, September, 25, 2016 at his home.

Mr. Champ was born January 24, 1925 in Pennsylvania, son of the late Frank Champ and Dominca Dorazio Champ.

He was a security guard for Navy Security Station.

He had served in the U. S. Air Force during WWII.

He married Rose Deyuilus Champ on October 6, 1951 in Pennsylvania.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Gary Champ and his wife, Michelle and Louis Champ and his wife Anita, all of Leesburg, VA; and six grandchildren, Kelsea, Melody, Summer, Logan, Tony and Christina.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 A. M. Thursday, September 29, 2016 in Green Hill Cemetery, Stephens City, VA with Rev. Eric Shafer officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the Clarke County Honor Guard.

Mrs. Pyne was born August 21, 1942 in Charles Town, West Virginia, daughter of the late Wager Fritz Penwell and Sarah Elizabeth Engle Penwell.

She was a member of the Stephens City Women of the Moose, Chapter #2134.

She enjoyed word search puzzles, playing the lottery and dancing.

She was retired from American Woodmark in Winchester.

She married James Edward Pyne, Jr. on May 31, 1969 in Charles Town. Mr. Pyne died June 18, 2009.

Surviving are a sister, Janice “Cookie” L. Reid and her husband, Brian of Inwood, WV; three brothers, Timmy Penwell and his wife, Patty, of Ranson, WV, Calvin Penwell and his wife, Patty, of Rio Linda, CA and Charles Penwell of Charles Town, WV; her faithful toy poodle, Bernie; and several nieces and nephews.

Her sister, Ellen Viands and Brenda James, and brothers, Lee Penwell and George Penwell, all preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 A. M. Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, VA with Pastor Mike Mayton officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be Timmy Penwell, Brian Reid, Charles Penwell, Floyd Ritter, Sr., Kay Ritter and Patrick McHale

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Margaret Norman Pope, 93, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, October 3, 2016 in the Winchester Medical Center.

Mrs. Pope was born December 26, 1922 in Unison, Virginia, daughter of the late Charles Walter Norman and Inez Long Norman.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Calvary Church of the Brethren, Winchester; Restoration Fellowship Church, Strasburg; American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Post 41; and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

She married Robert Edward Pope on January 3, 1942 in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Pope died November 27, 2011.

Surviving are three daughters, Mary Lee Robinson of Strasburg, VA, Betty Jo Merchant of Front Royal, VA and Becky Lynn Rohrbaugh of Maurertown, VA; brother, Williams “Billy” Norman; 10 grandchildren, Jeff McLaughlin, Sr., Kimberly Rohrbaugh, Kathryn Grogg, Daniel McGlothlin, Joshua McGlothin, Cindy Dalton Ames, Steven Merchant, Christopher Merchant, Casey Merchant and Samantha Furr; 18 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Nancy Gay McGlothin; brothers, Lynn Norman, Wallter White Norman, Gregory Norman and Bobby Norman, and sister, Rebecca Case, all preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 P. M. Friday, October 7, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home Chapel, Berryville, with Pastor Jay Ahlemann and Pastor Clarence Davis, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Berryville.

Pallbearers will be grandson, Steven Merchant, great-grandson, Levi Merchant, Darrell Rohrbaugh. Edward Crouch, Lynn Norman and Danny Grogg, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff McLaughlin, Sr., Kimberly Rohrbaugh, Kathryn Grogg, Daniel McGlothlin, Joshua McGlothin, Cindy Dalton Ames, Christopher Merchant, Casey Merchant, Samantha Furr, and Williams Norman.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P. M. Thursday evening and 1:00 – 2:00 P. M. on Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

Hunter was born November 27, 2002 in Reston Virginia, son of Craig Boynton Hagaman and Juliet Heston Browning.
A handsome young man with a smile that would light up a room, those dimples! Always ready with a hug, and kind words for anyone in need.

He was an 8th grade student at Johnson Williams Middle School, Berryville; played football with the Apple Valley Youth Football League; Little League Baseball and was active in Cub Scouts.
Surviving are his father of Berryville; mother and step-father, Squirt, of Kearneysville, WV; sister, Brittany Hagaman; brother, Chase Hagaman both of Berryville, VA; paternal grandfather, B. Craig Hagaman and Karen, of Berryville, VA; maternal grandfather, Bill Heston and his wife, Janet, of Round Hill, VA; maternal grandmother, Gail Warshaw of Winchester, VA; step-grandmother, Elaine Browning; and six step-siblings, Shana, Michael, Ronald, Kiara, Alexia and Julia.

A celebration of life will be held 11:00 A. M. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Enders & Shirley Funeral Home, Berryville, with Jay Blevins officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 P. M. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Christine Elizabeth Coviello, 73, of Bluemont, Virginia, died Saturday, October 15, 2016 in the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center, Winchester, Virginia.

Born July 7, 1943 in Waterbury, Connecticut, daughter of the late Pasquale D’Onofrio and Evelyn Lillie Hecox Valentini. She married Daniel David Coviello on June 3, 1960 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mrs. Coviello is survived by her husband of 56 years and their four children; Maria Ambrose of New Market, Angela Coviello of Bentonville, Stefany Smith of Avon, CT, Anthony Coviello of Strasburg, and her eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren

She was an award winning artist and a signature member of the Pastel Society of America; Salmagundi Art Club; Maryland Pastel Society; Connecticut Pastel Society; Portrait Society of America; Women’s Museum of Art in Washington, DC.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, October 21st, at 10:30am at St. Bridget’s Chapel in the Field, Berryville, with Rev. Stanley J. Krempa officiating.

Obituary for Walter J. Sowell

Walter J. Sowell of Berryville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Virginia on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

He was born on December 26, 1923 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Clifton and Mary C. Sowell.

Jack, as everyone called him, grew up in Ohio. After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the Navy during World War II, where he served as a signalman on convoys across the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific Oceans.

After completing his Navy service and a short period of civilian life, he enlisted in the Army where he served and retired as a 1st Sergeant after 27 years. As a communications specialist, he served two tours in Korea and one in Vietnam in addition to being assigned to the White House Communications Agency.

He married Dorothy J. Bennett in April 1957. Dorothy preceded him in death in 2010.

Jack leaves behind one son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Shelby, of Stephens City. He also leaves behind two grand nieces, Santanna and Gerri Lynn Harman of Accident, MD to cherish his memory.

All services will be private at Jack’s request.
